Chinese martial arts, known also as national martial arts , are a form of physical culture in China , that combined movements of kicking , hitting , wrestling , seizing , tumbling , striking , chopping and piercing into serial or single exercises , barehanded or with weapons .
Chinese martial arts could trace back to the primeval society , when people used sticks , bars and other tools to struggle against beasts . Later , more effective weapons were made for struggles against beast , etc ., Earlier , martial arts were exercised only in the army , and later were exercised also by the common people . Martial arts developed greatly in the Ming Dynasty ,when many schools of martial arts arose , together with theoretical books . Such books included theoretical conclusions . The representatives of them were “Jinong Faggot Book” , “On Martial Arts” , “Martial Arts Exercises After Farming” ,etc . They registered the martial arts of the different schools with appendixes of mnemonic formulas and illustrations. They have been important materials for researches on martial arts .
The modern martial arts consist of three categories : the boxing (Long Boxing , Taiji Boxing , South Boxing , form Boxing , Eight-Trigram Boxing , etc .) ; the weapon exercises (with long weapons , short weapons , soft weapons); and the sparring exercises (barehanded or with weapons) . The martial arts have been created and developed by the Chinese people and are a precious national cultural legacy.
